Sculptor
Julie Dierauer was born and raised in Menomonie,WI. She studied
art at UW-Stout and UW-Milwaukee and holds BS, MA and MFA degrees
in art.
Julie states " I met Stanley Borm, from the Dunnville Sandstone
Quarry in 1975. I was 18 with an itch to carve stone. Stanley was
already in his 70's when he gave me my first and only carving lesson.
He taught me about the fine features of Dunnville Sandstone, and
talked with me about the Mable Tainter Memorial Building in Menomonie,WI.
He gave me some chisels and a mallet to keep and showed me how
to use the flat, the pronged and the point chisels. He showed me
how to cut at different angles, how to split a piece of stone,
what veining in stone means, and how to cut stone on a sandbag.
He had some of the Dunnville Sandstone stacked by the foundation
of his house, as the quarry was dormant at that time. He gave me
a few of these and was my occasional supplier of Dunnville Sandstone,
in the 1970's. I've been carving as location and facility will
allow for the past 30 years."
Julie was trained in human portraiture and often works by a photograph
or models the image in clay and uses that to convert to a stone
carving. That is her process, direct carving into stone by hand.
"I am honored to be affiliated with Dunnville Cutstone Company,
where it all began for me." stated Julie. |
